Popularly known as the ‘Detroit of India,’ Chennai attracts an endless sea of people looking for fulfilling career and educational opportunities. Besides the IT/ITeS sector, the automobile, manufacturing, and other ancillary industries make Chennai an attractive option for many.
In terms of housing demand and supply, last year was good for Chennai. This year too, the hopes are high. As per the market estimates, about 20,000 new units are slated for possession in 2019. These 20,000 units roughly translate to Rs 1,000 Crore plus annual market for home interiors in the city. Interesting, right?
HomeLane, an interior designing solutions company, is betting big on this opportunity. Their second experience centre in Chennai is a step towards addressing the growing demand for modular furniture among new homebuyers in the city.
RoofandFloor had an opportunity to have an exclusive tête-à-tête with Tanuj Choudhry and Dipti Das of HomeLane where we talked about Chennai market, home decor trends for 2019, and much more.
Blending the old with the new
Chennaites, unlike most other metro population, still hold onto their traditional designs and yet aim for the comfort of modern-day designs. “We have witnessed a mixed demand for modular furniture and traditional interiors among new homebuyers in Chennai,” informs Tanuj.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Chennai loves to strike a balance between traditional design aesthetics and the ease of use of modern furniture.
Home decor that reflects the culture
After a hectic day at work, there’s one destination that we all seek— home sweet home. For this very reason, your home should be a reflection of your personality, style, and culture. Whether it is a set of beliefs, customs, or places you visit – it is always good to incorporate some elements of your culture into your home’s interior.
Explaining the same, Dipti Das, AVP-Design, HomeLane says, “Chennai is an interesting amalgamation of modern juxtaposed with deep-rooted traditions. Chennaites prefer elements in their décor that reflect their culture. They like handcrafted items, soft furnishing that has traditional motifs, and locally available fabrics for home decor.”
They are also particular about their place of worship. “The old, hand-made, open temple has been replaced by closed modular units with the long-lasting bell-shaped motifs on it.
Some even go to the extent of cutting out the bell shape on the door and installing small bells in between,” adds Dipti.
Colours
Colours play a significant role in one’s home. After all, colours are responsible for giving an aura and persona to rooms. Every colour is said to have a “mood” of its own and is believed to set the tone for the room. So, what works for Chennaites?
Well, “The colours that Chennaites like are distinct. To understand the same, look at the Kanjivaram. It has earthy colours, but it is not dull. Each colour is allowed to retain its intensity. In terms of furniture, we have seen Chennaites typically going for a classic, wooden upholstered sofa. The fabric would have an earthy base with traditional motifs on it,” adds Dipti.
Home Decor Trends for 2019
Multi-functional spaces and furniture
Since spaces are becoming smaller, furniture is expected to perform many functions. For example, a bedroom that becomes a study room during daytime or a small living room that doubles up as an extra bedroom. Thus, go for multipurpose pieces of furniture. Not only it is economical but you will also be amazed to see how beautifully some furniture can serve a dual purpose.
Want some inspiration? Our in-house design expert suggests converting your old chest into a beautiful sitting area. Chests are great for storage and are often kept in the corner area of a room or living room. Double up the chest by converting it into a comfortable sitting area. Add a small rug over the chest and complete the look with some designer cushions and a side stand.
Home automation
Home automation is another trend that people are investing in hugely. There is an aspect of convenience to it; at the same time, there is a growing sense of responsibility towards the environment. Thus, people are opting for sustainable appliances. For instance, these days, it is easier to switch off lights, geysers, or even AC using mobile phones.
Use of natural materials
Natural materials such as reclaimed wood and stone are back in trend this year. Colour tones of coral and blush are hugely popular all around the world. Living coral is the Pantone shade of the year and is being adapted into interiors a lot.
