No more plain janes
The winds of change are blowing towards high contrast colours and boldly patterned textures in wallpaper design. And sometimes the two styles are combined to form more intriguing accent walls.
This year, a feature wall is no longer just a splash of a single outrageous colour. Apart from that, it will now have other highlights like artwork or family portraits in appropriately coloured frames.
Want a unique feature wall? Then get large-patterned wallpaper, say, like a folk story design. Or roll on some textured paint. Better still, how about incorporating tiles? Imagine a Mediterranean blue or a rustic yellow in textured tiles. Now, that’s guaranteed to charm the pants off anyone!
Move over hygge
Hygge has had its time in the sun and now is ready to retire and make way for wabi sabi. All the accoutrements that made up cosy Scandi chic are now passe, and that means if you were in love with all the fifty shades of grey and white, then prepare to say goodbye to them. While minimalism is in (read wabi sabi and lagom), the colours are getting stronger and bolder. Contentment and home decor has newer definitions now.
Industrial is not cool
Edison bulbs and eminently exposed brickwork have stubbornly held on for a long time. It started with hipster cafes and then slowly spread on to homes, which sported the design proudly in the kitchens. But now it’s finally time to prise those steely fingers off and let industrial chic move on.
Let the pipework and beams remain behind the walls where they belong. Not only are they starting to lose their initial charm but also are beginning to be jaded. Why would you want your kitchen to look like that of a restaurant or a factory, anyway?
Plus, the colours are non-existent. All chrome and plain wood makes a dull home. It’s time to make your walls pop with some lush, vibrant hues this year.
Words don’t take your heart away anymore
The word art trend was huge. Is still huge. But there is a noticeable fading happening now. Put the blame on Instagram and Pinterest for this one for the overdose of cutesy images that showed farmhouse style houses adorned with word art on the walls or cushions. The “Live, Laugh, Love” sign has definitely begun to be cringe-inducing and is ready to be tucked away into the recesses of the attic.
Farmhouse is not a style anymore
Ok, the sound of all those hearts breaking at that is deafening. But really, the farmhouse trend with its reclaimed wood, barnhouse-style doors, and shiplap walls are now completely saturated. Yes, you can blame this one on Instagram and Pinterest too.
Also, people finally see how it sticks out like a sore thumb if it’s replicated in an apartment in the middle of a busy city.
But for all of you who are true blue fans of the style, there’s some hope. Replace some of the wood with granite or do away with the neutral colours and infuse some muted gold or matte black, and you can still pull it off in a way that’s befitting for 2019!
