5 Furniture Hacks To Update Your Living Room

Although we have the entire house to call our own, most of us literally live only in living rooms. This is where we relax after a hard day at work, watch TV, play with kids, and do countless other activities each day. Quite naturally, we get sick of living in the same surroundings and crave for a change which we often ignore in the context of our busy lives and small budgets.

However, updating your living room doesn’t mean throwing away old furniture and starting it all fresh. These small and fun furniture hacks work wonders in giving your living room an all-new feel without breaking your budget:

Bring out the books

If you are a book-lover, you don’t need to spend thousands on buying pricier accessories. A stack of books is a nice space-filler and adds the needed colour and elegance to your living room. The fact that they are almost always readily available close at hand is an added bonus.

If you have stairs in the living room, space underneath is great for placing a bookcase. You can use a combination of CD towers and bookcases to make the needed book-storing furniture without being a spendthrift.

Bare the living room

Pare down everything from the living room! Remove the curtains, the accessories, the photo frames, the side table and anything else placed in the living room to make it bare and unfurnished.

When a particular showpiece or a house plant is placed in the same corner for several years, our ability to think of anything new for that place takes a back seat.

Once the living room is bare, it helps your eyes move around the room in a new light. You can think of arranging the room in a new and interesting way. It can be as simple as rearranging the furniture or borrowing items from other rooms. Sometimes the best of decor could be lying in your closets for several years. Scan your closet and bring those awesome pieces out.

Create a craft corner

Has your child outgrown the cot? Is the cot lying around unused for several years? You can reuse the old cot to make a beautiful craft corner for the living room.

Not only does it look great in the living room, it also provides a creative space to your child who will be more than happy to address his/her artistic urges. This also means that you can keep an eye on the activity of your kid while being engaged in your work

Add hardware to existing furniture

Adding hardware to living room furniture enhances what is already there. If you believe that there is room for improvement, you can beautify your old furniture by switching the existing hardware with something new and something more decorative.

If you have furniture that is just plain, you can add drill some holes and add some decorative and stylish hardware on them.

Nailhead trim

It is probably one of the easiest DIY tricks for living room furniture.

A nailhead trim can instantly give your furniture a high-end look. Traditionally, nailhead trims were used to give a tailored look to the furniture. Although that still holds true, nailhead trim has since undergone a lot of transformation and is now widely used as a decorating tool for furniture.

You can use nailhead trim on a side table, chest of drawers or even on the sofa set.

You can apply them as simple borders or a more intricate pattern depending on the furniture and the look you want. You can use traditional tacks or go for the adhesive strips. Not only furniture but nailhead trims can also be used on windows, doors, and even on rugs, carpets and runners.
