When we come home after a tedious day, a clean and organised space can make the house welcoming. Contrary to what most people say, keeping the home organised is not only about having tons of storage space but about a combination of style and tidiness.
Home organisation takes effort. And the most important thing to remember is that there is no set formula. Each of us has our own methods for keeping our homes organised, whether we learned it from family or read it in a blog.
Whether it is a technique you have been practising for years or something you are yet to use, try these home organisation hacks to keep your apartment together in 2019:
Swap off-season clothing items
Buy big plastic boxes and use them to store off-season clothes.
You can stack these boxes inside the bed frame or keep them on top most shelves of the cupboard that is not accessible for other daily-use items. When the time comes (i.e. the season changes), switch the clothes in the closet with the clothes stored in the plastic container.
Keeping away off-season clothes provides you with a lot of extra closet space and makes it easier to keep the clothes neatly folded and arranged. And as a bonus, this hack also makes you take a peek at all the clothing items you own.
Assign a place to everything
Make sure everything in your house has a place. And when we say everything, we mean EVERYTHING.
Yes, even the TV remote and the newspapers.
When everything has a place and you consciously keep things at that place, it becomes a second habit. It becomes easier to clean up. Especially, when the apartment is small and there is a limited storage space, you tend to stack things at the nearest accessible corners thus making the space cluttered.
Also, in the process, you utilise every inch of space in your home. If there is an empty corner and nowhere to put the shoes, make a cornered shoe-shelf. Use the wall shelf to hand the bags and so on.
Use old wine racks as towel racks
While we have cabinets for storing bathroom essentials, the towels are usually hung over taps or at random places in the bathroom.
In order to make the bathroom organised and provide much-needed storage space in it, you can reinvent a wine rack to use it as a towel rack.
Also, to organise the bathroom cabinets you can use clear plastic boxes. Clear plastic boxes are useful because you can see what is inside and use it in different sizes to store things like extra soap, clips, bands, medicines, etc.
Create your own storage solutions
If your apartment is very small or it doesn’t have enough storage space, you can create your own storage solution by using a standing Japanese-style curtain.
A quick online search will help you find tons of pretty curtains for as low as Rs 1500.
And then you can use them as a second wall and throw all the stuff that you have nowhere else to keep. From empty suitcases to old clothes to unopened gift boxes, you can store a lot of things there. Using a standing curtain is a great way to managed clutter without really doing much.
Use a tray for kitchen/office countertop clutter
If you can wisely use a tray, it has the potential to transform clutter into a part of the décor. Especially in kitchen and offices, it can drastically reduce the countertop clutter while making the everyday needs way more accessible.
For example, you can keep most-used utensils, oil, spices and everything else well arranged in a beautiful tray on the countertop. When doing so, you have to brutally honest with what you truly use and deserve a space in your counter thus eliminating the unwanted items and reducing clutter altogether.
While these hacks are extremely useful, it needs a little discipline and some effort to make these hacks work for you.
Happy organising!
