Here’s an easy fix that you can DIY on a weekend off – just adding texture to one or more walls can instantly transform your room. Texture adds cosy depth and playful creativity to your spaces, making them pop. Here’s how you can add tactile interest to your walls so that staying indoors doesn’t have to be boring anymore!
Ribbed plastering
Stucco plaster is usually used on exterior walls but looks quite as good inside the house! A lime-based mixture of Portland cement, this plaster is applied with a trowel and can be raked down to create vertical lines, crosses, or undulations.
In this hallway, rough plaster has been combed down with a trowel to create deep parallel grooves that don’t need any other embellishment. This rustic, rough look is a showstopper all on its own.
Brick walls
Distressed brick finishes are a universal favourite in designers’ look books; they don’t cost the earth and they complement just about any décor style.
The texture of the weathered bricks plays a key role in this modern, timeless living room interior. Metal framed furniture and simple prints on the walls play up the earthiness of the bricks, and colour comes in through a profusion of fresh, green plants.

Gypboard wall
Plaster of Paris or Gypboard can be used to create wall panels, cornices or ornamental mouldings. In this contemporary bedroom, the designer has added texture to two bathroom walls to make a stunning statement.
Wood accent walls
Cladding with wood is a stylish way to create a standout statement wall. If you like a rustic look, opt to use reclaimed wood pallets, and if you like a more formal and refined aesthetic, you could clad the wall with plywood or MDF that’s finished with veneer on one side.
Vertical grooves will make your ceiling look taller, while horizontal panels will add visual depth. In this living room, the cutout along the entire length of the wall is used to show off accessories.
