“The first impression is the last impression,” goes an old adage. This holds true for your home as well.
You just get one chance to make a great first impression and the entrance of your home plays an important role in creating that impression.
Apart from welcoming your family and guests, did you know that the entrance to your home also acts as the entry and exit point for energy?
This is exactly why the main entrance of the home is given the highest priority in Vaastu.
Here are some simple Vaastu tips for the entrance of your home to attract positive energy.
It’s the game of direction
While finalising a home, Vivek rejected almost five homes as the entrance of the home was not as per the Vaastu norms. “I didn’t want to take a chance when it comes to the happiness of my family,” he says.
“This was also validated by a recent survey conducted by RoofandFloor where nearly 35% of the homebuyers said that the entrance of the home matters the most while buying a home.”
Giving a different perspective, Vaastu expert Gauravv Mittal says, “There is a wrong belief that West-facing homes are bad from a Vaastu perspective. That’s not exactly true; in fact, a West-facing home can be auspicious if it follows certain Vaastu rules.” Thus, next time you fall in love with a West-facing home, do not reject it outright.
Some of the ideal directions for the entrance door are:
- North: Allow sunlight, fresh light, and air to enter the home
- North-West: Brings in good health, wealth, and prosperity
- North-East: Brings in success in career and business
- West: Attracts positive energy
One should avoid an entrance that faces the South, South-West, North-West, or South-East directions.
Further, the entrance door should always open in a clockwise manner.
Bigger the better
As per Vaastu, the size of the main door should be bigger than any other door in the home to let more energy into your home. For better results, consider having a two-shuttered main door.
Also, the main door should always be above the ground level.

Material for the entrance door
When it comes to the material, the majority of homebuyers prefer a solid wood door for stability. Interestingly, this is also in line with Vaastu principles.
The material, however, can differ from direction to direction. For instance, if your entrance door faces the North, adding silver makes it more auspicious. Similarly, a door facing the East should have some metal accessories for the inflow of positive energy.
Simple décor tips
- Keeping the entrance clutter-free and clean is the first step to attract positive energy into your home
- Keep dirt and negative energy at bay with a beautiful doormat
- Having a nameplate on the main entrance door is believed to invite prosperity and good health
- Ensure that the entrance to your home is vibrant and well-lit all the time
- Adding plants can enhance both Vaastu as well as the entrance
Things to avoid
- Though a common practice, placing a mirror opposite the main door is not recommended as per Vaastu.
- Sliding and slanting doors are a strict NO.
- Avoid keeping the shoe rack in front of the main entrance. You can rather place it on the sides.
- Avoid main doors that can close automatically.
- In terms of colour, stay away from black.
