Unitech Promoters Fail To Get Any Relief In Fraud Case As Court Rejects Their Bail Plea

Unitech Promoters Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra received a major setback in their case of alleged fraud, when a Delhi court rejected their bail plea and remanded them to a judicial custody of two weeks. The prosecution stated a need for custodial interrogation to enquire about the various aspects of the case. The defendants had on April 1, been remanded to five-day police custody and were brought before the court at the end of the same.

A case against the two was registered on 31st July 2015 on the basis of a complaint filed by Arun Bedi and his mother Urmila Bedi. The mother-son duo had alleged that the builders did not provide them the possession of the flat costing Rs 57.34 lacs in “Wild Flowers Country” in Gurugram, even after the passage of the allotted time. Later, the court received an additional 90 complaints about the same project which were combined with the first FIR. According to the police, the company had received Rs. 363 crore out which only Rs. 35 crores were received by the present complainants.

It is interesting to note that Sanjay Chandra is also a co-accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam and makes an appearance in the court on a daily basis. His lawyer, Vijay Agarwal cited this as a reason of assurance that his client will not flee from justice and will adhere to any other condition imposed by the court. Mr. Agarwal also went on to suggest that granting bail to the Chandras was necessary to resolve investors’ issues.

The police however, strongly opposed the bail plea and informed the Metropolitan magistrate Ashu Garg that it felt that the accused could influence the investigation and tamper with the evidence. The magistrate then passed the order to send the accused to judicial custody, despite them having submitted that they would wait for justice if they were granted bail.
