How to Clean and Organise Your Refrigerator

How many times have you bought veggies for the entire week and found it rotten and unusable at the end of the week? Mostly, because half of it got lost amidst all the mess kept inside your refrigerator. And partly because drips, spills and crumbs accumulated in the fridge, lead to rotting of veggies.

To save yourself from this nightmare, you just need to spend some time storing and organising food in the fridge. This will not only help you easily find things kept in the refrigerator but will also help keep it clean and clutter-free. Here are few tips to help you get started

Do a clean sweep every fortnight

Right before going to the grocery store every fortnight, do a clean sweep of the things in the refrigerator and toss out anything that is old.

Not only will this give you a glimpse of the things you need to consume before it goes bad, but it will also make it clear about the things you need to buy. And the biggest advantage – it will significantly reduce the time and effort you need to invest in a deep clean.

Organise similar food in the same area

For example, keep veggies separate, and meat, condiments and cheese separate. You can use labelled baskets for easier and quick access.

This helps in keeping the food fresh and smell-free for long intervals. Every time you need something, just pull out a particular basket. The time it saves in finding contents inside the fridge is a boon for working professionals.

Do not keep sticky bottles

Do not put any bottle, jar or container inside the fridge if its exterior or bottom is sticky.

Store leftovers in the front

Food that needs to be eaten first must be kept in the front area of the fridge, ideally in a glass container.

Seeing it every time you open the fridge will ensure that you do not forget about them. Keeping them behind milk bottles or fruit baskets is a sure shot way of forgetting about them only to find a stinky surprise weeks later.

Vacuum clean for thorough cleaning

The sponge wipe might not be able to remove the tiny bits of leftover food from drawers.

Use the brush attachment of the vacuum instead to suck up the dried debris and do a thorough cleaning of the fridge.

If you have one of the old refrigerators with coils at the back, do not forget to clean that as well as it helps maintain temperature and reduce energy usage.

Line your shelves with easy-to-clean mats

These mats are easily available in the market, or you can make it yourself with plastic sheets or PVC sheets. If there is a spill, just remove, wash and replace the sheets. Easy, isn’t it?

Do not keep milk or any dairy products in the door

The temperature in the door of the refrigerator changes every time you open the fridge.

The fluctuating temperature of the refrigerator is not good for your dairy products and may result in it perishing faster.
