Like everything else, home décor evolves. Every year, a few new trends enter the home décor space. To keep our readers abreast of these trends, we spoke to some of the leading people in the industry. So, here we are with our home décor trend edit that will help you style your home in 2021.

But before we jump to any further, let’s take a quick look at the top trends of this year.

Minimalism: White-on-white décor and the use of grey as one of the two tones in a dual colour palette were considered very trendy in 2020. Minimalism was in, and homeowners loved the clean and light aesthetic of white and grey tones everywhere.

Multifunctional spaces: Largely due to the pandemic, multifunctional spaces became an in-demand trend that was necessitated by the work-from-home and online classroom culture. Dining tables doubled up as study spaces for kids, while home offices were carved out of any bit of available space—under the staircase, or outside in the balcony, for example.

Smart furniture: There was a fast-growing market for smart furniture that could do double duty. Beds that fold up against the wall, study desks that are pulled down when in use, nested stools, and sofas that open up into a bed were furniture pieces that found many buyers in 2020.

This totally versatile and sophisticated colour was experimented widely with rich patterns, monochromatic themes and paired with neutral or vibrant tones to create new looks.

Top trends to follow in 2021

Now, let’s take a look at our favourite 2021 trends that are really easy to bring into your home:

Sustainable décor is here to stay

“Sustainable décor will continue to be a popular décor trend through 2021 and the rest of this decade. Choose fabrics such as organic cotton, jute, or hemp that are minimally processed and grown using sustainable farming methods. Using recycled rugs and pillows made with recycled materials are just some of the ways you can reduce waste and be conscious of the environment when doing up your décor. Coir rugs that are handmade by local artisans will be popular in 2021,” says Dipti Das, AVP- Design, HomeLane.

Bold colours to take centre stage

Neutral colour schemes are on their way out, and we can expect to see more colours in homes. Living spaces will have more flair and vibrancy, with bold colours taking centre stage. The carefully matched colour palette will make way for a unique décor style that’s based on personality, where anything goes with anything.

Explaining the same, Parul Mittal, Director, Greenlam Industries Ltd. says, “A bold colour like yellow, that never fails to make a statement, will make way to various homes in 2021 as consumers look to enlighten their homes with pops of colour that energises the surroundings.”

However, “While adding colour to your home can seem like a fun experiment, be careful what you choose as colours are known to have a direct effect on your emotions. For instance, too much of red can over stimulate, while dark blacks and blues can make you feel depressed for no reason,” cautions Dipti.

In harmony with nature

“Décor, where the humans and nature can reside harmoniously, will be quite popular in 2021,” says Heena Jain, Design Consultant, WoodenStreet.

Add greenery to your balcony

Reiterating the same, Dipti explains, “Décor that incorporates living elements, such as a vertical green garden inside the house or a water body with fish and aquatic plants is said to impact our health positively; reducing stress levels and cleaning the air. Inward-looking houses with interior courtyards and indoor gardens are going to be the new norm in home design trends. Even pocket-sized apartments will have green balconies and a profusion of indoor plants.”

Cottagecore trend with a modern twist

In 2021, we can expect a fresh wave of trend that has been much in talks but comparatively less in action – Cottagecore trend.

“It’s all very wholesome, pastoral, and based around rural life. In the upcoming year, there will be a whole world of this trend with the latest spin on rustic reverie, paired with minimalism and modern aesthetics,” says Parul.

Imagine a space that is warm, comfortable along with quirky and eco-friendly elements that reflect our need for beauty, sustainability, and security. One can even explore handicrafts, soft pastel colours, quaint cottage interiors, macramé, animal print rugs and whatnot.
