Childproofing your home

Most people consider the preferences of the adult family members when setting up home. What about the tiny tots? Infants and toddlers need homes that are safe spaces for them to explore and grow up.

We share a few ways in which you can childproof your home for your little ones.

Socket covers

Have you noticed how kids seem magically attracted to power sockets? To keep their tiny fingers away from the electrical hazard, invest in covers for the sockets. They are a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Cabinet locks

To any tot, if there is a cupboard or a cabinet, it must be opened! Keep curious little ones out of trouble by fixing cabinet locks that can only be opened by adults.

Baby gates

Play time is best restricted to areas of your homes that you know are safe. You can stop the kids from wandering off to potentially dangerous spaces by installing baby gates. For instance, staircases, balconies, kitchen area can be cordoned off in this manner.

Faucet covers

Faucets can be rather painful for little heads that knock against them accidentally. Putting on covers made of rubber or other soft material can ensure that children don’t hurt themselves.

Corner guards

Table corners, counter edges and so on are sharp surfaces that can hurt when knocked against. Toddlers are invariably just tall enough so the edges are at head or eye level. Covering these corners with rubber guards will reduce the impact on your kids.

Banister nets

Banisters are extremely tempting to children to stick hands, legs or heads out of. If the child is very small, there are chances of falling through when left unsupervised. Drape nets over banisters to prevent kids or their toys from going overboard.

Keep breakables out of reach

You know that beautiful crystal showpiece that adorns your living room? Keep it far from the reach of your little ones. To tiny explorers, anything that can be pulled down or climbed on is extremely tempting. Also ensure that tablecloth edges, bedspread corners and so on are tucked away from curious little fingers.

Door slam protectors

When babies become mobile, there’s almost no stopping them. One area to focus on in terms of safety is doors. Install slamming protectors so that kids don’t get their fingers or hands jammed between doors and frames.

The same goes for hinges too.

Toxins and chemicals

Almost all households use cleaning liquids or disinfectants or pesticides that have chemicals in them. These products are harmful to babies and small children. Swap them for products that are gentler and have only natural ingredients that don’t harm children.

A little thought goes a long way in making sure that your home is a safe haven for your little ones too.
