Feeling bored and stuck during the lockdown? Do not let those feelings overpower you. Make use of the time on your hands and try these simple DIY ideas by Dipti Das, AVP – Design, HomeLane to give your home a fun makeover.
Shibori tie & dye
Tie & dye is a great way to decorate plain textiles, cushion covers, and throws. Use pure cotton or cotton blend fabrics as they work the best in retaining colours. Gather and bind your fabric using a thread or a thin cord. The result will differ depending on what you use for binding. Place the fabric in a vat dye, rinse, and dry.
Paper quilling
Paper quilling is the technique of rolling narrow strips of paper into 3D shapes. All you need to do is to take paper, either craft paper or newspaper and cut them into thin strips. Roll the strips and pinch them to make shapes like flower petals. Finally, glue these together to form the shape you want. This can be used to decorate picture frames, gift boxes, and walls.
String lampshade
This is a simple way to make beautiful lampshades. Use a blown-up balloon as a mould. Dip the strings (cotton) or twine in glue and wrap them around the balloon. When the glue dries, remove the balloon, and there you have it – a beautiful hand-made lampshade. Interesting, isn’t it?
Nail and yarn art
Nail and yarn art is very similar to the ‘connect the dots’ game that most of us have played during our growing years. Print the image you want to re-create and use it as reference points to fix the nails. Then, run the yarn around the nails to form the shape, and you’re done.
Repurposed gardens
Repurpose old or broken bowls and cups into planters for indoor plants and succulents. First, place pebbles at the bottom for drainage, then add potting soil before you insert plant/seed.
Watch your terrarium garden grow and enjoy the new freshness at home.
