The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna Receives More Than 2,700 Responses for Construction of Houses for Poor

As per the information released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Property Alleviation, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY), which was launched in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has received more than 2700 responses till date. The Yojna, which aims to construct houses for a population of 20 million poor people living in urban areas across India by the year 2022, is considered to be one of the most ambitious projects launched by the PM.

The ministry has received a total of 2773 proposals and more than 80% of these, which amount to 2324 proposals, have come from just 10 major states of the country including Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and West Bengal.

The largest numbers of proposals have come from the state of Tamil Nadu (674) followed by Karnataka (485) and Punjab (329). In order to implement these proposals, the central government will provide a total financial assistance of 22,615 Crore, over the span of next five years. The remaining amount required for the completion of these projects, which is around 77, 866 Crore will be raised through investments.

The state wise distribution of financial assistance by the Central Government and the number of houses will vary between 25 to 35 percent of the total expenditure expected for the implementation of the housing proposals. The greatest amount of expense will be incurred by the state of Andhra Pradesh, which will undertake the construction of 193, 147 houses, the highest number for any state, at a total cost of 13, 476 Crore. Of this, only 2,897 Crore will be provided by the central government with the remaining amount raised through investments.

Implementing these proposals will lead to the construction of around 1,425,464 houses for the urban poor.  An interesting fact to note is that even though the proposals offered by Gujarat (138), Andhra Pradesh (110) and West Bengal (136) are far lesser than the top three states of Tamil, Nadu, Karnataka and Punjab, the total number of houses constructed through these proposals will be comparatively higher.

It is also noteworthy that despite submitting 329 proposals, the number of houses constructed in Punjab will only be 42,497, which is significantly less than the number of houses being constructed by Madhya Pradesh, which has submitted only 59 proposals. In fact, Punjab will be second only to Jharkhand (40, 486) in terms of the minimum number of houses being constructed amongst the top ten states offering their proposals.
