Whether you’re doing up your home for the first time or looking for a quick pick-me-up to your decor, a rug is a perfect way to make your room look complete. Especially if you have an open plan home, rugs delineate and demarcate the spaces and tie up all the elements of the room together. They also add warmth and comfort underfoot and can be used to add colour and texture to your space.
We bring you the lowdown on the types of handmade rugs that can add zest to your home decor.
Patterned black and white rug
A two-tone area rug injects a punch of personality to any space and looks great when paired with natural materials like cane and wood. Opt for a black and white patterned with solid cushions to underline the same theme.
Sustainable material
With more people choosing to lead an organic lifestyle, a jute hand-knotted rug benefits both your family and the environment. The rich natural finish of the rug complements the subdued shades of wooden floors, simple furniture and bamboo decor.
Layer the rugs
Sometimes two rugs are better than one! Use a natural fibre style rug for the foundation, and layer it with a patterned or coloured rug that’s set at a jaunty angle to create visual interest. You can also use a faux animal skin rug as the top layer for a unique look.
Put your old jeans to good use
When your ripped denim jeans are just hanging by a thread, upcycle them to make gorgeous braided rugs. The regular layers of white and natural fibre in between add texture and colour. The right rug can pull the colours of a room together, and we imagine that this would be just perfect for a blue, brown and white bedroom.
Braided reversible rug
Handwoven and braided, an all-natural rug would look lovely in just about any space and can go well with any colour palette. Completely chemical and toxin-free, the sustainable fibres make an excellent case for natural living.
Patchworked, with much love
Scraps of leftover material from other carpets can be skillfully patched together to create a unique rug that’s infused with warmth and love. Create the look at home with squares of applique fabric in different patterns, sewn together with overlapping exposed stitches that feel very textural and homely.
Hook and needlecraft
If you have a nimble hand, you can craft exquisite rugs using crochet. The thick wool used makes it quick and easy, and you can pick the colours that go with your design palette. It’s the perfect cosy corner for your pets too!
Handmade rugs are painstakingly created by master craftsmen and can last much longer than machine-made rugs. They age beautifully over the years, appreciate in value and can be handed down through generations. Choose your handmade rugs with care; they may well become an heirloom one day!

I like that this post pointed out that it is important for us to consider the material when choosing a handmade rug. My wife and I are looking to have our rugs replaced. I will choose a sustainable material to have our rugs made.
