Chennai Metro Phase 2: All You Need to Know 

The Chennai Metro Phase 2 is anticipated to begin operations at some point between the years 2025 and 2028.

The 116.1-kilometer project will enhance the integration of the existing Chennai metro system, enabling convenient access to all areas of the city. The project will encompass three corridors, prioritizing the expedited completion of the Madhavaram-CMBT section under Line 5 (Red Line). 

Chennai Metro Phase 2 Completion date 

The 20-kilometer elevated corridor from Taramani to Siruseri SIPCOT is scheduled for completion by 2026, while the section from Lighthouse to Poonamallee is expected to be operational by the end of 2027. The entire 116.1-kilometer route of Chennai Metro Phase 2 is projected to commence operations in phases from 2025 to 2028.

Phase 2 Funding for the Chennai Metro: 

The central government has agreed to pay for about 65% of the estimated total cost of building the Chennai Metro Phase 2 Project. Officials from the Finance Ministry said that the total cost of the building will be Rs. 63,246 crore. 

The project used to be in the state sector but is now in the central sector. The project was paid for by the Tamil Nadu State Government. The Union Government only contributed 10% of the cost that was expected. 

Loans worth Rs. 32,548 crores were made possible by the Central Government. A little over Rs. 6100 crores of these funds were used to build the project. 

There will be subordinate debt of Rs. 7,425 crore and stock of Rs. 33,593 crore, which together make up 65% of the total cost that the Central Government will pay. The project’s loans will be given straight to Chennai Metro Rail Limited and will be thought of as Central Government loans that need to be paid back. 

Chennai Metro Phase 2 Status Update 

The tracks where driverless trains will operate will go through a trial starting this month. The first segment that will be tested for the driverless metro will run from Porur to Poonamallee depot, i.e. corridor 4. 

The testing will undergo for around two months and post that driverless trains will be operational commercially. The corridor from Power House to Porur is expected to be operational six months after the Porur-Poonamallee stretch has been operational. Overall the operational timeline for the different corridors of Chennai metro phase 2 is between 2025 and 2028.
