The new year has already dawned and, many of us are looking forward to moving into our brand new house. Following tradition, this will be preceded by the housewarming ceremony to invite all the elements in that will make your house a home.
“Griha Pravesh or housewarming ceremony is a valued and treasured moment in a person’s life. To make it successful, the ceremony must be done only in an auspicious time. The auspicious time is calculated based on dates (Tithis), days, Lagna, and Nakshatra available,” says Gauravv Mittal, a renowned vastu expert.
He further explains that there are different types of Griha Pravesh. These include:
- Apoorva: When an individual enters a new house for living, it is called Apoorva griha pravesh.
- Sapoorva: There are cases where people live in some other place or city. Thus, when they return to their home for living, it is called as Sapoorva griha pravesh.
- Dwandhav: Due to a natural calamity or other reasons, if a person has to leave their home, then they have to perform griha pravesh puja vidhi to live in their old home again. This type is known as Dwandhav griha pravesh.
Now, let’s help you plan the ceremony well in advance to make the best of it.

Points to remember
According to Gauravv, there are several things that one should keep in mind about the house warming ceremony. These are:
- As per Vedic beliefs, the month of Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, and Jyeshtha is considered highly auspicious for housewarming ceremonies.
- However, one should avoid Chaturmas or four months – Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, and Ashwin.
- Except Tuesday, housewarming can be done on all other days.
- Avoid griha pravesh in an under-construction house, until the doors are in place, especially the main door.
- After the ceremony, do not lock your main door as it is considered inauspicious. Make sure somebody stays in the house for some days.
