A close look at things around you, and you will be amazed at how much plastic we use daily. Plastics are everywhere. These easy-to-obtain single-use plastic is being produced on a massive scale only to be thrown away, clogging the oceans, landfilling, and slowly making their way to our food chains.
Off late there has been a massive uproar about plastic pollution. Everybody is talking about the endangered aquatic life and the rapid speed at which our blue planet is being irrevocably toxified.
In a shocking statistic, we humans have produced more plastic in the last ten years than the whole of the last century.
While there has been much hue and cry about plastic contaminating the earth, the real question is what are we really doing to cut down the plastic pervasion?
This Earth Day, Let’s Pledge to Cut-Down Plastic from Our Homes
Earth day is here. Every year since 1970, we celebrate Earth Day on April 22 to ponder on the negative impact of industrialisation on the face of the earth. A lot has been said and done in the last 49 years of Earth Day and this year the theme of Earth Day is to ‘Protect Our Species’, which are dying under the increasing burden of plastic pollution.
Of course, actions are being taken. A lot of states in India like Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi have permanently banned single-use plastic. However, it is not enough. As humans, each of us needs to do our share to reduce the carbon footprint and move towards plastic-free earth.
While industrial and mass-use of plastic are being curbed on a national level, we also need to say no to use of plastic from our homes. And it is as easy as it sounds. A little persistence and you can drastically cut-down plastic from your homes.
Here are a few simple steps that can make a huge difference
These might seem like small initiatives, but in addition to reducing per-head plastic use, these initiatives go a long way in changing the human behaviour concerning plastics. This Earth Day let us take a pledge to do our bit to ‘protect the species’ and make the earth a better, cleaner, and healthier place to live, not only for humans but for every species out there.
