What to Unpack First in Your New Home

The last box has been transferred into your new apartment and now you find yourselves surrounded by piles of boxes, tired with all the efforts of packing and moving in. After the daunting task of packing and moving in is taken care of, it is the time to start digging in and placing things in order.

While some people dread packing, a lot more people hate unpacking.  Mainly, because they feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the task in hand. Therefore, to make sure that you don’t feel stressed about unpacking, it is a good idea to organise the process by breaking down it into several steps of unpacking.

Here are few tips on what to unpack first in your new home

Settle the large furniture first

Assuming that your house is all washed and cleaned before you have moved in with your belongings, you should first decide on where the large pieces of furniture will be placed.

It is best if you can decide on the spot beforehand so that you can take help of the movers to lift and place the large (and probably heavy) furniture.

In case you didn’t get the opportunity to have a clear view of the layout of your new home, try to reach half an hour ahead of the movers to decide where to place the important pieces of furniture, such as the bed, the couch, the TV, washing machine or any item that needs a designated place of its own.

Set up your bed and put fresh linens. After a tiring day of packing, moving and some unpacking, having a clean and organised bed is bliss.

Kitchen comes second

The process of moving in into your new home is going to leave you hungry.

Start with unpacking your kitchen essentials like cookware, followed by food staples and spices. Also, kitchenware takes up a major share of the boxes. Once you have unpacked the kitchen stuff, you will realise that a major chunk of unpacking is completed.

Bathroom items

Bathroom items such as toiletries, medicines, and other personal care items should top the list of items you need to unpack next in your new home.

Find your toothbrush and toothpaste, bring out the shampoo and soap, hang the towels and unpack any other bathroom essentials you are going to clean and refresh yourself.

Don’t forget to arrange medicines on the medicines cabinet.

Make a note to pack a pair of clothes, innerwear, and sleepwear, along with bathroom essentials so that you can take your time unpacking clothes and arranging them.

Pets and kids are next

If you have kids at home, you should unpack essentials such as diapers, favourite toys, baby food, books, and games. Familiar items make them feel at home immediately in the new home and will keep them occupied. You can then concentrate on the unpacking without worrying about keeping them engaged.

If you own pets, you should also take care of their needs immediately upon reaching your new home. It is a good idea to pack items such as pet food, water, food dishes, and its toys in a separate box and mark it. This way you can get all the pet’s stuff by unpacking just one box.

Finishing up

Once you have unpacked essentials for kitchen, bathroom, and kids, everything else can wait until you get time. Instead of rushing things up, take the time to think about the best place and best way to arrange things. If you stay organised and set priorities, the process of unpacking will become a lot easier.

Remember to dispose of packing materials after every unpacking phase to avoid your house getting cluttered.

Listening to some music and doing work in coordination with kids and other family members will make the exhausting process of unpacking fun and lot easier than expected.
