The colourful twinkle of paper stars, the glitter of wrapping paper, and the shine of baubles are now lighting up alleyways everywhere. Christmas is around the corner, and you can feel it in the air! This is one of the most universally celebrated festivals for its sheer spirit of gift-giving and joy. This is also the time when you can deck up your house in the brightest colours and have fun while doing it! And it doesn’t end with just a loaded Christmas tree. Here are some of our homegrown tips on how you can make your house stand out.
Lighting up inside
Lighting is arguably one of the most crucial aspects of Christmas. Don’t limit yourself to hanging stars or putting up a Christmas tree in your living room. Spread the light all around.
Make your own mini winter village by mixing up paper lanterns with some metal ones that can pass as “houses” and light up the “streets” with string lights or small candles. Spread some salt or baking soda all around for a snowy winter and your village is complete!
If you have a few plants at home incorporate them into the festive decor by hanging red ribbons or by placing some red Christmas ornaments in and around them.
Playing with the decor
Why limit Christmas to just the hall or to small ornaments? Make small changes throughout your home to reflect the festive spirit! Opt for some colours other than the traditional red and green to make your home different.
Contemporary Christmas decor calls for deep delicious blues, rich creams and dazzling yet muted golds with a splash of grey. For the dining table, bring out the best of your crockery, put sprigs of faux holly with berries at the centre of the table, and light up some aromatic candles.
Stairs and bannisters
Stairs, bannisters, little alcoves, and corners all offer plenty of opportunities to enhance the Christmassy feel of your house. Line the corners of your stairs with red and green baubles and tealight or stack boxes wrapped like gifts.
Fill up glass lanterns with Christmas ornaments and circle them with string lights. For the bannisters, get all-green garlands and wrap them around all over. Add sparkle with some glitter and holiday lighting. Don’t forget those stockings. They are not just for holding gifts on Christmas day but for decoration as well!
Doors and windows
Doors, both inside and outside, are prime spaces for a pretty Christmas decor. Intertwine lighting with green garlands around your main door, and add a wreath with red ribbons to go with it. Or try pine cone inspired ornaments and pair them with gold sashes, which makes for a more elegant feel.
Don’t neglect the windows. Salt crystals are the key here to create frosted glass effects everywhere. Take your coloured Christmas bulbs, daub some glue, and roll them in salt crystals to get a nice snowy effect. Place candles deep in a pile of salt inside a glass lantern or mason jars, and place them by the window sill.
Cut out snowflake patterns and paste them on the window or if you are good with your craft work, then you could also get coloured paper and cut out reindeer too.
