About a decade ago, many consumers opted for tiles in the palettes of white, cream, or the occasional darks like red or yellow. Tiles were perceived as one of the mundane elements in home designing and décor. Cut to 2021, today consumers have become more informed about their choices, clearer about their requirements, and way more experimental about their preferences.
We spoke to A V Mallikarjuna, Assistant Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Aparna Enterprises, to understand which tile shades will dominate in 2021. Here’s what he has to say:
Classic rustic wooden finish
Consumers, of late, are hesitant to use wood for their interiors as it requires high maintenance. Instead, to create a fine wood finish and a rustic look, consumers use wood colour/pattern tiles. With the advent of digital printing technology, homeowners can create any wooden texture/pattern on their tiles and choose from different finish styles like matt, glossy, textured, etc.
Green is the new black
Sustainability, green living, organic lifestyle are the buzz words in today’s times. Palettes of green will see a huge comeback this year as many consumers prefer these soothing colours to make their interiors calm and eco-friendly.
Green also has a positive impact on reducing stress.
As many consumers would still be confined to their homes due to the ongoing pandemic, using green tiles both for flooring and walls will help create a good atmosphere within the house.

But black will never get out of fashion
Black and grey colours are universal and timeless. Today, consumers use different shades and textures of black and grey to give prominence to certain areas of the home, like the living room, balcony, bedroom, or reading area.
Still not letting the European feel go
A decade ago, marble and stone finish was quite sought after. However, marble became expensive to acquire and maintain; and stones gave an unfinished look to the house. Again, with the advances in technology, today homeowners can get the same look through tiles without spending much. Areas like bedrooms, puja rooms, the living area are where such tiles will be more popular.
Beige has replaced white
When it comes to lighter shades, beige will see prominence in 2021. Beige offers a tranquil resonance within the house and will be the most sought-after colour this year. Like white, with beige, the room for personalisation and customisation has expanded through digital printing techniques.
