Small Kitchens; Big Festivals

Kitchens can be tricky spaces. Especially when you’re living in a modest-sized apartment.

The problem with small kitchen areas is that they tend to get crowded, messy, and crammed up quickly.

But don’t worry. You don’t have to let a small kitchen area bog you down.

Instead of looking for larger spaces for your kitchen, you just have to get creative and find a way to make your kitchen work better for you.

And we’re happy to say that there are plenty of ways to do so.

With this in mind, we’ve put together some ideas that will make your kitchen appear spacious and elegant. Consider using these when designing your kitchen.

Lighter shades and contrasting colours

The choice of colour for your cabinets, floor, shelves, countertops and walls makes an impact on the apparent size of your kitchen. A general rule of the thumb is to use lighter shades when you have less space and darker colours when you have more.

The use of lighter shades makes your kitchen appear brighter and spacious.

However, you could also mix and match it up.

For example, you could use darker colours on the walls, and contrast it with lighter shades on the cabinets. This way your kitchen will appear bigger.

Pot racks and wall storages

Pots and utensils tend to be bulky in size and take up valuable kitchen real estate.

For both design and functional purposes, make sure you use your walls efficiently to hang or shelve your vessels.

Pot racks need not necessarily be suspended from a ceiling, but could also be wall-mounted. Alternatively, shelves or wall storages can also help you make the most of your wall space.

Space-saving furniture

If you plan to use furniture as a part of your kitchen interiors, consider using space-saving furniture.

This way your kitchen area could be used for multiple purposes.

For example, a backless stool could be quickly tucked under a table top. Or, a roll-out cabinet could be used to serve as a storage space for kitchen cutlery.

By using furniture this way, you will be able to use your kitchen space for multiple purposes.

Open cabinets that go up to the ceiling

Boxed cabinets on kitchen walls are visually cumbersome and take up a lot of space.

Instead, try open cabinets without doors or those with transparent doors.

Open cabinets are visually welcoming and give a sense of expansiveness even in a limited area.

Along with this, you will also notice that your kitchen will look more appealing if you make your cabinets go right up to the ceiling.

These cabinets not only provide for additional space to store items but also prevent accumulation of dust on the top.

Yes, you may need a step stool or rolling ladder to get to those higher shelves. But, holiday plates, glasses, bakeware, and items that are seldom used are good choices for storage on those shelves.

Add windows

Apart from the fact that natural light promotes healthy living and proper ventilation, the use of windows in kitchens also makes good design sense.

Natural light from the windows makes the kitchen look brighter and even bigger than its real dimensions.

Create the kitchen of your dreams

Regardless of size, kitchens can be made into functional, beautiful, and organised spaces. And by applying modern design principles, they can be done to look larger and spacious.
