Pros and Cons of Artificial Grass

Pros and Cons of Artificial Grass

Love green lawn? Course you do! Don’t have enough space in your apartment? We hear you. If you are nodding your head in agreement right now, then you have come to the right place. Lack of space doesn’t mean you can’t get a small lawn in your home. If you haven’t already guessed, we are talking about the artificial grass. Also known as faux grass or artificial grass turf, it has lately gained significant popularity among the city dwellers. But is it really worth it?

“Artificial turf is a type of faux grass that is made entirely from synthetic fibre. It can be used in terraces, balconies, patios, lawns, poolside, and even inside your home, making it highly versatile,” says Dipti Das, AVP-Design of HomeLane.

In this post, we take a look at the pros and cons of artificial grass to help you decide. Let’s begin with the pros.

It’s always greener: Artificial grass looks aesthetically beautiful with little or no maintenance. Unlike real grass, it is not affected by the change of seasons. Thus, maintains it lush green, well-manicured look throughout the year.

“It serves the purpose of decor quite well – it looks as good as natural grass, is long-lasting, maintenance-free and looks fresh all the time,” add Dipti.

Pros and Cons of Artificial Grass

Low maintenance:  Artificial grass requires very low maintenance when compared to natural grass. It is stain-resistant and can be easily vacuumed, ensuring a clean look and feel. And less time on maintenance means more quality time in your lawn with your loved ones.

Additionally, unlike real or natural grass, it does not require any fertilisers or regular watering to grow and remain lush. Not to mention, you don’t need to spend on a lawnmower or a gardener.

Highly versatile: Available in different sizes, density, and shades of green, artificial grass is quite versatile. It’s great for indoors as well as outdoors. You can add it in your balcony and create a small lawn. You can also use it on your deck or roof terraces. And if you have pets at home, then definitely it’s a better choice.

Pros and Cons of Artificial Grass

Durable: When it comes to durability, artificial grass always scores over real grass. Depending on the quality, it can easily last for up to 5-15 years or even more.

Don’t make a call yet. We are yet to look over the cons.

Cons

Expensive:  In terms of cost, the upfront cost of artificial grass is higher. However, considering its low maintenance, it pays in the long run.

Lacks a natural feel: A no brainer! While the look of artificial grass is quite real, the feel, however, is not. It lacks that fresh feeling that one gets when walking barefoot in the real grass. Also, it tends to get very hot when exposed to direct sunlight.

Non eco-friendly: One of the biggest downsides of artificial grass is that it is not biodegradable. Also, when used outside, it prevents rainwater from percolating into the soil, thereby impacting the soil quality.

Pros and Cons of Artificial Grass

Our verdict

So, should you go for artificial grass? Well, there’s no concrete answer to this question. Artificial grass is, undoubtedly, a smarter and convenient option for city dwellers with limited or no access to sprawling gardens. It is also low-maintenance, pet-friendly, allergy-free, and highly durable. However, if you love gardening and takes pride in it, real grass would be a better option for you.
