How you design your flooring has a profound effect on the way space looks. It lays the foundation for the aesthetics of that area and also sets the overall personality of the room. As homeowners, we often pay the least attention to the bathroom. However, given the high usage of this space, it is a zone that requires utmost attention, especially the flooring.
So, here’s what you need to keep in mind before finalising on your bathroom floor.
Use the right material
One can experiment with various flooring materials across the house. However, when it comes to the bathroom, one key aspect to keep in mind is that the flooring should primarily be anti-skid. This will prevent any possible accidents, which often occur in this region.
But aren’t anti-skid tiles a little dull? Well, not anymore. Today’s technology has enabled the creation of many bright and exciting tile designs as well as colours and patterns in the anti-skid range as well.

Focus on the coverage area
The bathroom is one of the two spaces in the house (the other one being the kitchen) where tiles are used even on the walls.
The critical aspect here is to know how much area needs to be covered using tiles. For instance, in some homes, there are issues with water percolation and leakage. In such houses, using tiles on the walls will help the homeowner in keeping the walls free from damages occurring from exposure to water.
Low maintenance, low porosity, & high durability is the key
Our bathrooms are exposed to a lot of water, moisture, and changing temperatures. Thus, tiles in this section may get spoiled fast. To avoid situations where you need to change tiles frequently, it is better to use low porosity tiles which have low water absorption rate; keeping the surface clear and reducing the risk of bacteria and algae formation.
Tiles also need to be low maintenance and high durability, so they last longer without involving many expenses.
Size matters here
Bathrooms should ideally use an average to large-sized tiles. This is primarily because small tiles leave room for more joints/grout lines which lead to the accumulation of dirt in the tile line.
Also, large tiles give a more spacious look, which is essential, as modern homes tend to have smaller restrooms.
Keep the necessary checks in place
Laying tiles is a cumbersome task and re-doing them all together is even more troublesome. Hence it is essential to have some necessary checks in place before you start this process. Make sure that:
- Plumbing work is done completely
- All joints are sealed properly
- Bathroom fittings are plugged on and sealed
However, remember the bathroom floor looks best when it is in sync with the overall décor and ambience of your house. So plan well and have a slip-free cosy looking restroom.
