How to Set-up Your Own Prayer Room Using Vaastu

A temple can be a beautiful addition to a home or an office. Earlier, there used to be an entire room dedicated to the ‘home temple’. However, with a space crunch in urban homes, it’s no longer possible to have a large prayer room. The old traditional pooja room has been replaced by small fix-on-the-wall temples.

According to Vaastu Shastra, a prayer room is believed to keep out negative energies and protects your house from harmful vibes. Here are a few Vaastu rules for setting up a prayer room without taking too much space.

Height is important

As per Vaastu, the height of the prayer room should be such that the base of the idols placed there is at the same level as the person’s chest.  When the prayer room is higher than this level, the devotee will not be able to see the idol, and hence the connection won’t be that strong.

If the prayer room is installed at a height below this level, then it is considered disrespectful. The ideal height to install a home temple is a few inches above the ground.

Wood is considered auspicious

According to Vaastu, a temple made of wood is auspicious and brings good luck. Apart from wood, marbles are also used in creating the prayer room.

Note: Avoid using glass for temples as the glass is believed to trap negative energies.

Proper lighting is the key

Always light diyas or candles on the south-eastern side of the mandir. The direction is believed to attracted positivity for the people living in the house.

Make sure that a small electric light inside the temple is always switched on.

Use the right direction

The direction of the temple should be such that the devotee faces east while praying. If east is not possible, the west can be another alternate location for the prayer room or temple. It is recommended to use the north-eastern or eastern part of the home for installing a home temple.

Temple area should be clutter-free

Always keep the prayer room clean and clutter-free. Remove unwanted things and change the flowers daily.

Placing water in a copper pot in the north-eastern direction of the temple helps in enhancing the water element in the house. Change the water daily.
