How to Decorate Small Bedrooms

Stuck with a house that seems rather small? Despairing that your bedroom is suffocating you? Well, worry not. Our interiors expert has a few tips that can make a small bedroom look much larger.

“Decorating small bedrooms is difficult because every bedroom has an essential piece of furniture, i.e. the bed that takes up the maximum space in the room. However, having a bed doesn’t necessarily mean that you will have to settle for less in terms of style and décor. There are many designing hacks you can follow to make your small bedroom look bigger,” says Anita D’Souza, an interior designer based in Bangalore.

By following Anita’s simple design ideas and colour schemes, you will be surprised at how quickly your room can be transformed.

Invest in multifunctional furniture

A clutter-free room naturally looks cleaner and spacious.

Invest in furniture that can serve multiple functions and help to streamline the bedroom. Think of an ottoman with built-in storage or one that can double up as a coffee table. A bed with storage underneath can store blankets, books or just about anything that can add to clutter otherwise.

Space it out

Many people believe that shoving furniture against the wall will free up space and make the room appear larger. “However, the effect is quite the opposite,” Anita says.

Beds and sofa sets that are shoved against the wall result in a claustrophobic feeling, making the room feel cramped.

A good idea is to angle your bed leaving some space behind. Leaving room to breathe around your furniture lends the appearance of more space.

Paint it smart

It is no news that painting the room in lighter shades makes it appear larger. However, there is a lot more you can do with paint.

Decorate Small Bedrooms

For example, painting the trim in a slightly lighter colour than the wall will make it appear as the walls are farther away, giving a roomier feeling. Similarly, painting the ceiling in a darker shade or a bold pattern will trick the eyes to look upwards, giving the room an illusion of height.

Avoid excessive furniture

The less furniture you have in your room, the bigger it will look. You don’t necessarily need a couch in the bedroom.

Similarly, you don’t always need two bedside tables in the bedroom. Having a bed, one small table and a study/work table as the only pieces of furniture in the bedroom will make it look much bigger.

The trick is to use multifunctional furniture and make the most of the few things you have.

Use mirrors to create an illusion

Mirrors reflect light as well as create depth and height, making the bedroom space appear larger.

There are many ways you can use mirrors in a small bedroom. The best way is to go for a floor-to-ceiling mirror. However, if that is not practical, you can cleverly angle the mirror or place it opposite the window, creating a wider sense of space. Placing multiple mirrors in a salon-style wall is a great way to create a statement wall.

Install scones

Ditch that nightstand and free up space by installing scones for the bedside lamps. This can be placed slightly above the side of the headboard to draw the eyes upwards. It helps to give the room an airy look and makes the room appear cleaner.

An adjustable scone is a great addition for someone who loves nighttime reading.

Choose a bed with a leg

Having a bed with legs creates an open, airy feel in the bedroom. The more floor and wall that shows under the furniture, the larger your bedroom will appear. A bed elevated on thin legs is especially suitable for a small room.

If you can’t have a bed with legs, try to have at least one piece of furniture with some height such as the dresser, bed or the nightstand. The legs need not be too tall but just enough height to enlarge the space.
