With Christmas just a week away, it’s time to put on your DIY cap and get crafty with the holiday décor.
Santa and the Grinch
Don’t throw away those toilet paper rolls just yet. With some poster colours and cotton balls, you can transform them into apple-cheeked Santas, roly-poly Snowmen, and frowning Grinches. Hand out the paintbrushes; the whole family can join in on the fun.
Recycled Christmas
No tree? Never mind, use old wooden planks to craft your own version of the traditional tree. Anchor the pieces with a central spine, and use a hot glue gun to hold them in place. Size and shape won’t matter as long as you get the general outline right.
Light candles on all your branches for a warm glow.
A sock snowman
Everyone loves a snowman, and this is one that won’t melt in the spring. Make your own version of a Christmas snowman with an old white sock that’s filled with rice. Tie a jolly scarf at the neck add beads and buttons and a wide smile. The pom-poms on the cap add the finishing touch.
Mistletoe and berries
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a wreath at the door. Pine cones, berries, and fronds decorate this handmade wreath, that’s held together by a little glue and a lot of love. Hang it on your front door or over the mantelpiece for a festive touch.

This year, take a break from convention and let all the red and green take a break. Think elegant. Glam up your home with shimmering metallic—silver, white and gold are just as festive, and make a spectacular combination indeed.

Don’t have the space to put up a tree this year? Here’s a fun alternative, fashioned out of just branches and twigs. Strung together with twine, this charming tree can find a place on any bare wall. Cut the branches to size, and hang up dried citrus and cinnamon rolls for a whiff of spice.
Papercraft
Need some quick and easy paper decorations? Festive mobiles out of just plain white paper could be just what you’re looking for. Use readymade templates, or draw out the outline yourself. Hang your mobiles on a string across the window.
Apple candles
Light your dinner table with these unique handmade apple candles. Carefully core an apple, leaving the skin and around half an inch of the flesh intact. Fill the shell with hot wax, inserting the wick in the middle before the wax hardens. Alternately, just scoop out only the top of the apple, and place a tea light candle inside the hollow.
