Plant to Buy for your home

The Best Plant to Buy for Every Room in your Home

Wondering why the Golden Pothos you brought for your bathroom didn’t survive while the one in the living room is doing just fine! This is because although deemed suitable for indoors, not every house plant can flourish in the same environment. Different areas in our home receive a different amount of sunlight, have different temperatures (thanks to air conditioners) and have very different levels of humidity.

And not all houseplants are created the same. A plant that needs sunlight to thrive will not grow in the windowless bathroom, or an air plant will die if you keep it at the living room window where it receives direct sunlight.

To choose a plant for a specific room in your house, you need to consider the plant’s growth requirements and the room’s aesthetic. Placing a cactus in the calm and serene bedroom is the last thing you would want to do. Lucky for you that there are hundreds of houseplant varieties to suit any kind of dwelling and aesthetic style.

Bedroom

Your bedroom is the place where you relax after a tiring day. Therefore, it is important to keep a plant that eases you into relaxation and decreases stress and anxiety.  A pot of fragrant lavender not only smells nice but can also filter toxins and improve the indoor air quality. Just put it close to a sunny window and water it at regular intervals ( once weekly).  You can also opt for snake plant or spider plant that grow beautifully with indirect sunlight and needs water once in a while.

Don’t go overboard with indoor plants as it is important for the bedroom to be neat and uncluttered. A plant in the side table or two plants at the window are just perfect.

Living Room

Aesthetics is one of the major criteria when selecting a house plant for the statement space in your house. Your living room is the place where you spend a lot of time with friends and family.  Owing to its showy looks, the peace lily has always been a popular choice for living rooms. It is easy to maintain and adapt to almost any lighting situations glowing with its glossy green leaves and flowers.

If you love playing with colour, your go-to plants can be philodendrons, begonias, or cacti and succulents or go for a more elegant choice with rubber tree plant or bird of paradise plants.  All these plants grow well with moderate sunlight but cannot survive in the dark. Therefore, it is important to consider the kind of exposure your living room gets before making the final selection.

Kitchen

Most kitchens are hot and humid. Although not as humid as the bathroom, still the humidity level in the kitchen is way higher than the remaining house. Also, the counter space is limited and therefore, avoiding bulky or hanging plants will be better.  When it comes to the kitchen, there is nothing better than a plant that can help you cook. Potted herbs on your kitchen window or in the counter-corner is an excellent idea. They are both decorative as well as useful. Nothing can enhance the taste of food more than a couple of freshly plucked sprigs sprinkled on to the dishes.

If your kitchen receives plenty of sunlight, rosemary is a good choice. You can also opt for ferns and air plants that can survive in high humidity and needs moderate sunlight to grow.

Bathroom

Low light, high humidity, and warm temperature make the bathroom environment perfect for keeping tropical plants.  Go with tropical plants such as ferns that grow under the canopies in nature and flourish well in the humid condition of the bathroom. You won’t need to water the plant at all as they will absorb moisture from the environment and are self-sustainable. Talk about being low-maintenance.

Dining Room

Usually, the environment in the dining room is similar to that of the living room and you can plant similar plants in both. You can make choices and add different varieties of plants to your living room and the dining room. A great house plant option for the dining room is bamboo.

Lucky bamboo is one houseplant that is extremely low-maintenance and a treat for the eyes. It lives happily in any light conditions and grows without any soil simply in a jar of distilled water. Place one at the centre of the dining table to bring elegance to the dining area or display it on a buffet or a plant stand to add the natural feel to your dining time.
