The Coimbatore International Airport expansion, which has been waiting for more than two decades, is finally about to begin after the Tamil Nadu government decided to unconditionally give over the land acquired for the project to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
According to reports, for Coimbatore International Airport’s expansion plans, the State government has decided to transfer the obtained patta and government poramboke land to AAI without any fee or conditions under a 99-year lease agreement.
Nevertheless, if the airport is privatized, it has strongly urged the Centre to contemplate distributing the generated income with the State.
A government order authorizing the Coimbatore International Airport expansion was issued in 2010. After that, about 600 acres were found to be suitable for purchase, 468.83 of which were on private property.
Over time, the acquisition process encountered several difficulties. Since 2018, the State government has allocated funds for land acquisition, totaling ₹2,088.91 crore so far.
Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati reported last week that around 97% of the land had been bought; the whole procedure will be finished in two weeks.

According to Mr. Abhishek, the forthcoming airport development in Coimbatore is likely to draw large amounts of capital for the city. Direct global connectivity will simplify corporate operations since clients and partners no longer have to go to Delhi or Mumbai for meetings.
This will especially help government sectors and MSMEs, motivating them to become visible in Coimbatore.
Mr. Abhishek went on to say that greater accessibility will contribute to the city’s already strong reputation for innovation and creativity.
The real estate industry in Coimbatore is expected to attract more non-resident Indian (NRI) investors, particularly from Singapore and Dubai, thanks to the affordable flights offered by Flydubai.
The planned eastern and western bypasses, along with existing flyovers on major highways, a ring road that will significantly improve connectivity in Coimbatore, addressing traffic congestion will be a bonus for the Coimbatore International Airport expansion plan.
This, together with the airport development, will increase commercial and logistical activity. Coimbatore’s advantageous location near major ports—Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, and Mangalore—will strengthen its position as a regional hub for trade and industry.
Overall, Mr. Abhishek believes that the Coimbatore Airport Expansion will be a game changer for the city, boosting economic growth and attracting new firms and investors.
Coimbatore International Airport Expansion is very exciting news. Commercial and primary real estate enterprises would increase their demand for properties for sale in Coimbatore.
