Bengaluru to Get India’s Tallest Skydeck: Announcement

Bengaluru to get 250-metre Skydeck; Karnataka Deputy CM and Bengaluru Development Minister, DK Shivakumar finalizes location and announced the project will be funded by the Government.

Saying that there is a high chance that the 250-meter Sky deck will be constructed near NICE Road, Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar said that all the opposition leaders and the BJP MLAs from Bengaluru have arrived at this decision on July 27.

Proposed Skydeck for Bengaluru

The Skydeck needs about 25 acres of land Now, the elected representatives of the entire Bangalore including the leader of the opposition, Mr.R.Ashoka, have unanimously endorsed the location, NICE Road said Shivakumar after a meeting with the elected representatives including the BJP MLAs at Vidhana Soúdha.

“The promoters of NICE Road currently own the land. As mandated by a Supreme Court ruling, NICE must give the government about 200 acres. Thus, we decided on the location on NICE Road, stated Shivakumar, in charge of the development portfolio for Bengaluru.

Other areas that the sources mentioned include NGEF land in East Bengaluru’s Byappanahalli, Sandal Soap Factory in Yeshwantpur, Jnana Bharathi campus of Bengaluru University, and Kommaghatta where a new helipad was built for PM Narendra Modi in 2022. However, NGEF land was ruled out due to the factor of distance from the old airport of Bengaluru.

Thereafter the state government decided to acquire 25 acres of land to set up the University in Hemmigepura locality near NICE Road in the South-west region of Bengaluru.

However, Shivakumar was evasive when he was giving details of the project by not indicating the exact location of Skydeck. “For the consideration of this project, we had narrowed down to about 10 stations out of which Union Ministry of Civil Aviation had some concerns about the height of the Skydeck”,

He added that other areas that were considered included areas near Kommaghatta and the Jnana Bharathi Campus of Bangalore University on the western side of the city but were shunned with concern given the likely implications for University students.

Asked if the Skydeck location is far from the city, Shivakumar said: “We have thought over every aspect. Some of the advantages of this location include accessibility to tourists heading to Mysuru and Kodagu and connectivity is only going to get better with the Peripheral Ring Road under construction.

Owing to the location, the project will be taken up in the Cabinet soon and the Government funds will be used to fund the project.

The Rs 850-crore Skydeck project is proposed to be a prime tourist destination that would incorporate a sky lobby, a city-viewing deck, a theatre, an exhibition hall, a private precinct, and commercial spaces.

However, Bengaluru does not have other notable landmarks like the one you find in other cities such as Mysore Palace, so we decided to construct this Skydeck,” added Shivakumar.

Tunnel Roads:

Shivakumar also discussed the 18.5 Km Tunnel Plan in Bengaluru. Tunnel road connecting Esteem Mall near Hebbal to Silk Board – North-South corridor covering 5 km.

“Tenders will be called after the Cabinet meeting,” he said adding, “Some land acquisition is needed, and all the MLAs have shown consensus towards this plan.

He also said that for the next phase, another tunnel from East to West is proposed. We have also recognized about 17-18 signal-free corridors in the city.

If we must build a signal-free corridor of 100 km, the expenditure is around Rs 12,000 crores. Invitations to tenders are yet to be issued though this could be done shortly.

About Metros, in the future all the metros lines will be converted into double-decker flyovers,” he said.

Discussion on the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill:

Shivakumar also focused on the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill while communicating with legislators and brought to their attention the urgency of development to cope with the growth of the city.

It is noteworthy that Kempegowda built Bengaluru, Kengal Hanumanthaiah built Vidhana Soudha, and SM Krishna made Bengaluru a world city, and now it needs urgent attention to bring something to make Bengaluru the choicest city to live in India.

He stated that the Cauvery 5th Stage water supply project for outlying areas was in the trial phase and would be ready by August 20.
