2020 has been a little low on joy, but that doesn’t mean we cannot hark to the herald angels singing and rejoice in the silence and calmness of the holy night. Festival season brings new beginnings with the promise of hope, joy, and peace for the whole world.
With Christmas just a week away, it’s time to put on your DIY cap and get crafty with the holiday décor.
Santa and the Grinch
Don’t throw away those toilet paper rolls just yet. With some poster colours and cotton balls, you can transform them into apple-cheeked Santas, roly-poly Snowmen, and frowning Grinches. Hand out the paintbrushes; the whole family can join in on the fun.
Recycled Christmas
No tree? Never mind, use old wooden planks to craft your own version of the traditional tree. Anchor the pieces with a central spine, and use a hot glue gun to hold them in place. Size and shape won’t matter as long as you get the general outline right.
Light candles on all your branches for a warm glow.
A sock snowman
Everyone loves a snowman, and this is one that won’t melt in the spring. Make your own version of a Christmas snowman with an old white sock that’s filled with rice. Tie a jolly scarf at the neck add beads and buttons and a wide smile. The pom-poms on the cap add the finishing touch.
Mistletoe and berries
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a wreath at the door. Pine cones, berries, and fronds decorate this handmade wreath, that’s held together by a little glue and a lot of love. Hang it on your front door or over the mantelpiece for a festive touch.
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
This year, take a break from convention and let all the red and green take a break. Think elegant. Glam up your home with shimmering metallic—silver, white and gold are just as festive, and make a spectacular combination indeed.
A Christmas cabin
Fill your home with festive spirit —here’s a Christmas cabin that’s full of cheer and baked goodies. Gingerbread men, jolly Santas, and pretty reindeer find a place alongside charming bells and snowmen in this lovely table décor.
Apples and spice
Apples and cinnamon have always been synonymous with Christmas. Spruce up your sideboard décor with scented vanilla candles embellished with cinnamon curls and a side of apples, and fill your home with delicious scents.
Decorate with felt
A little ingenuity will go a long way in creating these lovely tree ornaments with scraps of cotton or felt. You’ll have to cut out duplicate shapes, pad them a bit with some cotton, and sew the shapes together with easy blanket stitches. Stick on sequins, sprinkles and bows, and use a marker pen to add the smiles.
Crafty Christmas tree
Don’t have the space to put up a tree this year? Here’s a fun alternative, fashioned out of just branches and twigs. Strung together with twine, this charming tree can find a place on any bare wall. Cut the branches to size, and hang up dried citrus and cinnamon rolls for a whiff of spice.
Papercraft
Need some quick and easy paper decorations? Festive mobiles out of just plain white paper could be just what you’re looking for. Use readymade templates, or draw out the outline yourself. Hang your mobiles on a string across the window.
Apple candles
Light your dinner table with these unique handmade apple candles. Carefully core an apple, leaving the skin and around half an inch of the flesh intact. Fill the shell with hot wax, inserting the wick in the middle before the wax hardens. Alternately, just scoop out only the top of the apple, and place a tea light candle inside the hollow.
Angels we have heard on high
Hear the sweet strains of angels in your home, with these pretty angels created out of just a paper plate and a plastic spoon. The halo adds the cutest touch. The pictures below show you how to go about it in easy steps.
Rudolph and His Sled
Hark! Is that the jingle of Santa’s sleigh? Thick cardboard and tiny scraps of cloth go into the making of this pretty-as-a-picture Christmas vignette, with Rudolph waiting patiently beside his sleigh full of gifts. Super easy to make, and we love the colours too.
Christmas in a vase
Don’t like to follow convention? Then this tree in a vase is for you. Decorate the bare branches with Christmas ornaments, and pile the presents below. With love, just for you!
Bottle top angels
Before you throw away those plastic bottles, you can put them to good use in your home décor. All you have to do is to cut the bottle in half, place a ping pong ball on top and decorate using ribbons, lace and coloured paper. Let your creativity shine through.
Log cabin tree
Dig into your pile of firewood, and pull out some logs for this unusual wooden tree that can be placed on a table or mounted on the wall. Tiny stars and red seeds complete the look.
