Chrompet is located on the Grand Southern Trunk Road between Pallavaram and Tambaram. The rather unusual-sounding name is derived from an old leather factory called Chrome Leathers. It is a concatenation of ‘Chrome’ and ‘Pettai’. 

The area of Chrompet grew around the company. The factory itself is now defunct but the company’s hoardings are still visible around the place. Other landmarks in the place include the Madras Institute of Technology where the former Indian President Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam studied. Chromepet is situated along the GST Road, making travel to Tambaram and Pallavaram extremely quick. The road also offers connectivity to OMR, which is home to a multitude of IT companies. The Trichy-Chennai Highway located to the west of Chromepet also give the residents smooth connectivity to other parts of Chennai.

Chromepet Railway Station provides train connectivity to other major stations in the city. However, Chennai Central Railway Station is about 30 kilometres from Chromepet. The Chennai International Airport is merely six kilometres from Chromepet.
